A laser periodontist is a type of dentist who specializes in the field of periodontics. This field of study is related to the treatment of the diseases of the periodontium - the area that includes the gums, the periodontal ligament, the alveolar bone and the cementum.

The laser periodontist is an expert in dealing with the conditions of the periodontium including periodontitis, gingivitis, and gingival recession. The laser periodontist may also do the surgical placement of dental implants. He or she is also in charge of the maintenance of these implants.

Laser periodontists may be members of the American Dental Association since periodontics is one of the nine accepted specialties in the field of dentistry. To be a licensed laser periodontist, a practitioner must be a member of the American Academy of Periodontology.

To become a laser periodontist, a person must take the four-year degree program in dentistry. This should be taken in an accredited dental school in order to get the DMD or DDS degree. After this, the dentist must then be part of a periodontology residency-training program that is accredited by the professional dental associations. This would consist of an additional three years of formal training. This training will focus on the management of the diseases of the periodontium and all aspects related to the dental implant technology. The laser periodontologists may also get a board certification from the American board of Periodontology. This would get them the certification with the title of "Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology."
