The periodontium is the area that includes the gums or gingival, the cementum, the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. To put it simply, periodontology is the study of anything that surrounds the teeth.

The disease of the periodontium has many forms. However, the cause of these diseases may be traced to the accumulation of the bacterial plaque that damages the teeth and periodontium. This could lead to inflammation and can damage the teeth structures that will result to teeth loss. This disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.

In order to treat the periodontal disease, the dentists may use lasers. The application of lasers is used in the treatment of the inflammation of the area called periodontitis. Through the use of lasers, the bacteria may also be removed and the teeth and periodontium may be saved.

The use of lasers has also advanced the procedures related to periodontology. The patient becomes more comfortable during the dental treatment because the procedures give him or her less pain. Since the lasers are also highly precise instruments, only the problem area is being affected by the surgery. The surrounding area is protected and the wound is smaller. Bleeding is also reduced.
