Are Lasers Safe
Many people are wary about trying new procedures in the field of medicine and dentistry. The usual reason for this is the questionable safety of the breakthrough medical procedures. With the introduction of lasers in dental treatment, the patients again would ask, "are lasers safe?"
Let us look at the seals of approval from the dental associations first. The Food and Drug Administration has already approved the use of lasers for several dental procedures. In fact, lasers are being used in the field of dentistry as early as the year 1994. However, the American Dental Association has not given its Seal of Acceptance to any dental laser system. A Seal of Acceptance from the ADA means that the product has met the standards set by the ADA for efficacy and safety.
Although the ADA has not approved any laser dental equipment, many dentists continue to use them in practice. The truth is, more and more dentists are using dental devices for some of their procedures. The lasers being used for dental procedures are sufficiently controlled in order to protect the patients from damage. The power output and the exposure of the area to the laser may be controlled by the dentist to ensure the safety of the patient. While doing the procedure, it should be noted that proper protective equipment, particularly for the eyes have to worn by everyone in the room. What this means is that the lasers are safe, as long as the correct procedures and safety precautions are followed.
